Steam Frame starts at $1,059 and you'll want to enter the stock lottery before September 17 for a higher chance of getting one this year

The Steam Frame is ready for launch, and Valve has finally announced pricing and availability for its streaming/standalone VR headset.

There are two models of the Steam Frame available:

• Steam Frame (256 GB) w/ VR controllers: 1,059 USD/ 1,529 CAD/ 1,049 EUR/ 889 GBP/ 1,609 AUD/ 4,539 PLN
• Steam Frame (1 TB) w/ VR controllers: 1,299 USD/ 1,859 CAD/ 1,279 EUR/ 1,089 GBP/ 1,969 AUD/ 5,549 PLN

Valve has two additional purchase available alongside the Steam Frame at launch.

There's the Ergonomic Accessories Kit. This costs 49 USD/ 69 CAD/ 59 EUR/ 49 GBP/ 89 AUD/ 229 PLN and includes two hand straps (similar to the Valve Index's), over-the-head strap, and extended light blocker.

There's also a power adapter, which costs 29 USD/49 CAD/39 EUR/29 GBP/49 AUD. There's not one included in the box, though any USB Type-C charger of 45 W should cut it if you want to save the cash.

How to sign up for a Steam Frame at launch

If you don't mind the price, signups for a Steam Frame reservation can be made anytime between now and September 17 at 10 am Pacific Time on the product page.

Valve will be doing a one-time randomisation to determine who has a unit reserved for them and who is stuck on the waitlist. This takes place on September 17. From this, Valve will determine who has a unit reserved in their name and who is stuck on the waitlist.

Here's Valve on how the reservation system works:

• Folks can sign up for the model they’d like to purchase between September 14 and September 17 at 10 am Pacific Time
• When signups close, we’ll do a one-time randomization to determine reservation and waitlist order
• Based on the results of that randomization, customers receive an email later on the 17 indicating they are on the reservation list or waitlist
• Anyone coming to the product page after September 17 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time will be able to join the waitlist and will be added to the back
• We expect to send the first batch of purchase emails out on September 18, and will continue sending those out as units become available to ship
• For those on the waitlist, it means their place in line is beyond the number of Steam Frames currently available for reservation, and we will notify folks if and when they are moved into the reservation queue.

It's a similar system to the one Valve used for the launch of the Steam Machine, which so far seems to be working as intended. Orders for the Linux box were said to be going out daily back in July, with Valve believing then that it will be done with the reservation queue for the Steam Machine by the end of the year. In some regions, it had already begun offering units to those on the waitlist.

"We found the reservation system to be helpful in limiting resellers and improving the purchase experience," says Valve.

The Steam Frame is a different beast altogether, with a varied range of components and heaps of LPDDR5X memory chips, which could make life more difficult for Valve, but it seems the reservation system is at least working as intended. The main thing to note is that, by signing up ahead of September 17, you secure the best chance at a Steam Frame anytime soon.
