James Nicholas has been promoted from COO to CEO of Trailmix, with founder Carolin Krenzer moving into the role of executive chair after almost a decade running the company.

Nicholas joined Trailmix as COO in 2023 and has been running the studio day-to-day for the past eight months. He and Krenzer worked together previously at King, and she says she’s known him for thirteen years.

“Handing over the CEO role is of course not a decision I took lightly; Trailmix has been the biggest part of my life for the best part of a decade,” Krenzer wrote in an update on Medium. “But I’m grateful beyond measure that I get to pass the leadership of Trailmix to someone I trust completely, and to keep serving it in a different way.”

Nicholas, in turn, credited Krenzer and Trailmix’s founding team for “building something not just worth joining, but worth believing in.”

He added: “We have a purpose we genuinely believe in, a strategy we are aligned behind, and a team that brings real passion, quality and commitment to their work. My job continues to be, to make sure every Trailmixer can see their own impact in every experience we create.”

Trailmix, the Love & Pies studio, was founded by Krenzer and Tristan Clark in 2017, and Supercell acquired a majority stake in the company in 2022.

MobileGamer.biz spoke to Trailmix GM Felicity Gracie-Herst last year about keeping Love & Pies competitive in an increasingly crowded merge 2 market.
