Even though I was way too new (and low level) to understand how PvP worked in World of Warcraft's early days, I knew by osmosis that it was made for tryhards. WoW PvP was not only a massive grind, but a competition against other grinders for a unique title that no normal person would even dare to go for.

WoW: Forever borrows a lot from the classic game, but the torturous PvP system won't be one of them. In a new blog post, Blizzard explains how it has simplified the system overall to avoid asking players to derail their entire lives for bragging rights.

Those old titles are still there—High Warlord for Horde players and Grand Marshal for Alliance—but you won't be racing to keep your place on an invisible leaderboard every week. Instead, it's going to be pretty straight forward: Anyone who plays a lot of PvP will get rewarded eventually.

You'll have a currency and a point-based progression system to worry about. Honor is the currency you'll earn for killing enemy players, completing battlegrounds, and finishing PvP quests. Blizzard says it has normalized Honor gains across all the different battlegrounds so that none of them are more efficient than the others. As you do all of those things, you'll earn Rank points that unlock 14 tiers of rewards, which include powerful PvP gear and those flashy, prestigious titles. Rank points will have a weekly cap, too, so you can't just marathon to the end over a weekend.

All of this will be wrapped up in a PvP season that will reset once a new one starts, presumably to let Blizzard add a fresh set of rewards encouraging players to do the climb all over again. Every season will have weekly tasks that will give you bonus Honor and Rank points as well as a Legacy Point, Forever's account-wide meta progression system.

While I'm sure the most hardcore WoW veterans will scoff at the idea of normies running around with fancy PvP gear and titles, I don't think it would be responsible of Blizzard to ask people to stay up for multiple days trying to maintain their place on a leaderboard. Back in the old days, the system incentivized people to share their accounts with friends or guildmates just to keep up. The new system, while still a grind, follows Forever's general ethos of capturing the spirit of the old MMO while making it realistic for people who can't spend every waking moment of their lives logged in.
