The Resident Evil games are a defining example of the survival horror genre. Each entry places players in a world full of puzzles, while monsters lurk around nearly every corner. The games also follow an overarching narrative explaining where Resident Evil's monsters come from and who created them. This begins at the Spencer Mansion in Raccoon City, where players encounter zombies created by the T-virus, a bio-organic weapon (B.O.W.) the Umbrella Corporation created under the guise of a pharmaceutical company. Since then, this has expanded to different branches of the original virus and other B.O.W.s, like the Las Plagas parasite.
