Quarantine Zone is getting a free expansion with a whole new location, and it's time to 'Experiment with drugs'

It's finally time, everyone. It's time to figure out the answer to the world's oldest question: what's wrong with Miami? Quarantine Zone—the game about manning a checkpoint and making sure plague-bearers don't sneak their way through—just showed off its new, Miami-based expansion at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct.

Quarantine Zone: Miami Zero will arrive as a free update for the original game and it's coming on October 15, bringing you to the titular, and entirely new, location. It's sun-drenched, absurd, and comes with a whole gamut of new ailments and symptoms for Florida's unlucky inhabitants to suffer from and smuggle past you. Or attempt to smuggle past you, anyway. Your job is making sure they don't.

Man a checkpoint, root out the secretly ill, and maybe even cure them as Quarantine Zone whisks you down to the sun-soaked beaches of Miami. "Experiment with drugs" exhorts its PCGS trailer, which I think is also what they put on the city welcome sign. The Miami Zero update is free and arriving October 15. Grab the full game on Steam.

I must say, "making sure they don't" involves more hitting people with hammers than I'd expect for a job manning a quarantine checkpoint, but I guess that's why I do this for a living and not that.

You don't just hit people with hammers. That's one tool in your diagnostic arsenal. In the trailer, we see our brave quarantine officer catching poorly people using X-rays, some kind of scanner stick, and more. They also just start tasing people at one point, which feels like it must violate at least a couple constitutional rights. Do they have those in Miami?

Perhaps the most tantalising part of the trailer—and hats off to the marketing genius who came up with it—is its giant, bold, green-text exhortation to "Experiment with drugs." In addition to rooting out Miami's secretly sick at the checkpoint, it looks like you'll also be working long hours in the lab to… do something?

It all looked very involved, and featured a number of different scientific instruments. The end result seemed to be turning a normal-looking guy into the Incredible Hulk, though, which I think can't have been the original intention. Could it?
