If you're like me, you've probably become increasingly disheartened almost by the day at just how hard it's becoming to distinguish real photos from fake, AI-generated ones. It does not bode well for the future. There are plenty of suggested solutions, but I like one I just learnt about in particular, in the form of the upcoming CAIM1 camera.
The company, Caim, says it "is the world's first camera that attests human origin of your moments the second you press record and gives physical and open verifiable proof."
Even more surprising than this, though, is where I heard about the camera: Noctua's X page. Yes, the maker of the absolute best fans for your gaming PC apparently also makes the little fan that goes inside this camera. I suppose that explains the colour scheme.
The photo on Noctua's X post shows the little fan inside—the sensor that sits in front of it has been removed. It seems the camera itself doesn't come with a lens, either. The company says it's a "BYOL: bring your own lens" kind of deal.
Noctua has a separate page explaining how it keeps the camera cool and why it went with the specifc fan it did. The fan in question is the NF-A4x10 5V PWM, which Noctua says "provides a combination of compact dimensions, strong airflow and pressure performance, low-noise operation and precise PWM speed control."
"Using a conventional 12 V fan," the company says, "would have required an additional step-up converter." But this would of course take up more room and chew through more of the battery life, plus create more "electrical switching noise and ripple."
Noctua also explains that the fan's bearing system and motor drive helps prevent vibrations and "tonal noises" which do, indeed, seem very important to keep quiet in something like a camera, given the sensitive nature of the sensor and optics.

Given Noctua has consistently impressed us here at PC Gamer by how quiet its fans are despite pushing through plenty of air, it makes sense that its fans are being sought by other kinds of manufacturer than PC ones. Heck, we've seen a Noctua fan in a gaming mouse, so I suppose a camera shouldn't really be that surprising.
The specific camera here seems like a particularly useful one to lend a hand towards, though. Combatting AI fakery will surely be an ongoing battle over the coming years; it'll be interesting to see which methods for doing so will stick around.
The camera company says, "We've partnered with leading security hardware innovators Tropic Square to integrate TROPIC01. From the moment you hit record, your sessions are locked behind an auditable hardware-encrypted pipeline, ensuring that what you capture belongs exclusively to you."
Apparently the verification—the crypto proof—is stored on an "immutable decentralised infrastructure." The proof is open and accessible for anyone to verify, too.
