Valheim 1.0 changed a ton about viking survival, but some things remain the same—like my tendency to repeatedly die to fall damage in the Mistlands. A new item helps traverse all those foggy marble mountains and steep drop-offs, but I didn't find it until I was ready to leave the biome. I'll save you from a similar fate with a quick explainer on how to get the Grappling Hook in Valheim.

Find Hooks to unlock the Grappling Hook blueprint

You can find Hooks in the Infested Mines, the Mistlands' bug-riddled dungeons that are just as difficult to navigate as the rest of the biome. I cleared out several dungeons before stumbling upon one with a hidden stone door that I almost skipped, but realized those glowing blue glyphs must mean something.

The Hooks were inside a Dvergr Treasure Chest sitting beside other valuables, like Black Cores. I scoured a few more dungeons later and found a couple stacks of three Hooks, but you'll only need one per craft to make the Grappling Hook.

How to make the Grappling Hook in Valheim

Make the Grappling Hook at the Black Forge

  • Requires:
    • 10 Yggdrasil Wood (Harvested from Mistlands trees)
    • 10 Refined Eitr (Sap and Soft Tissue at the Eitr Refinery)
    • 4 Mandibles (Seeker Soldier drops)
    • 1 Hook

The Grappling Hook takes some getting used to, so play around with it somewhere safe before relying on your new toy in emergencies. Remember there's a delay to load the hook with your initial left-click—that's what always gets me when I'm in a hurry to escape—then you can aim and fire. Use the space key to reel yourself in with the chain, and right-click to release the hook again.

There's no real swinging about, either. You just limply hang until reeling yourself in, but that's better than falling to your death for the millionth time.
