AMD's market cap just blasted through the $1 trillion barrier

AMD's market cap, the measure of the company's total worth according to its share price, breached $1 trillion on Monday. That's $1,000 billion, to you and me.

AMD's stock valuation has been on a roll recently. CNBC reports that AMD's price jumped 10% on Monday, making for a grand total of 25% appreciation in just five days. Overall, AMD shares are up 180% this year. Not bad.

The gains are thanks to AMD increasingly raking it in from, yup, you guessed it, AI. It reported revenue of $11.54 billion during Q2, up 50% from the $7.69 billion recorded in the same quarter last year. AMD’s Data Center business, which includes AI chips, reported sales of $6.7 billion, up 107% from a year ago.

CNBC also reports that AMD CEO Lisa Su is predicting another doubling from its Data Center business in 2027. So, it's all going pretty well for AMD shareholders, at least.

Of course, it says something about the extraordinary times we live in that despite AMD's epic new valuation of $1 trillion, it's still worth less than one-fifth of arch-rival Nvidia. As I type these words, Nvidia's market cap clocks in at $5.4 trillion.

As it happens, CEO Jensen Huang last week also predicted that Nvidia will sell twice as many chips in 2027 as in 2026. So, there's apparently no immediate prospect for a return to normality in the chip market.

Indeed, as much money as AMD is making from AI chips, it's still well behind Nvidia. So, if AMD can increase its market share, who knows where that market cap might go. Honestly, it's hard to keep up with, much less take seriously these kinds of numbers.

Memories of Nvidia becoming the world's first $4 trillion company way back in the mists of July 2025 almost seem quaint. It's all gotten right out of control.
