A hobby dev built a free, 3D galaxy map for Warhammer 40K that loads like lightning in your browser

Sometimes it's nice to just find something cool and fun and free on the internet, and the Cartographia Imperialis is just that: A 3D galaxy map of the Warhammer 40K Milky Way you can peruse in your browser.

It has the same simple, awe-inspiring majesty as Mass Effect's take on the concept, and you can explore it like an isometric videogame: Left click and drag to pan around, right click to rotate the camera, mouse wheel to zoom in and out. You can click on notable planets or regions to get little lore entries, or pull 'em up by name in the index to snap straight there on the map.

I'm not sure where creator Sami Gashi sourced the text for entries, pulling straight from official sources or paraphrasing in their own words, but I quite like the very in-universe prose. Take the entry for largely-unremarkable hive world Jouran, for example: "Its dossier is a reminder that strategic maps hide ordinary misery behind a clean point of light," the entry reads. "Jouran's value lies in quotas met, bodies counted, and local authorities willing to preserve output by any sanctioned means." That's good stuff.

Perhaps best of all, Cartographia Imperialis is completely free with no ads, and the map is shockingly lightweight for its graphical presentation and the current state of the internet. It loads super quick, and I haven't experienced any slowdown clicking around.

The only thing I'm missing is a nod to the Koronus Expanse of Rogue Trader fame, my personal gateway drug into the 40K universe. But that feels like a peevish, small-minded complaint given how cool and freely-given this thing is. Creator Gashi has a Ko-Fi page set up if you would like to support them⁠—they indicate an interest in creating interactive maps for other fictional worlds as well, and I'd love to see their take on other settings.
