Each villager in Dave the Diver: In the Jungle DLC has a gift preference. If you give them something they like, they will be happy. If you give them a favorite gift, they will be thrilled. Meanwhile, if you give them something they dislike, they will reject the gift. In this case, you can still give them another gift, as the rejected gift doesn't count for the daily gift limit.
