Poor Gary: Happy Bastards' PC Gaming Show trailer is a masterclass in delegation

You can check out all the games from The PC Gaming Show on the show's Steam page, where you can wishlist your most-anticipated games and get more information on everything shown!

The protagonist of Happy Bastards' new PC Gaming Show Trailer is the first time I've truly seen the dark turn-based strategy obsessed side of myself portrayed in a game trailer. Sprawled out on a comfortable chair, talking about how brave and smart he is while his underlings do all of the work? That sounds like me playing Xenonauts, Menace and, after I've installed the available-right-now demo, Happy Bastards.

I've gotta say, it's rare that a game trailer catches my attention for being funny, but Happy Bastards seems to have a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour that works well for me, even if it's mostly at the expense of poor Gary.

This trailer focuses mostly on the combat which looks as expected for fantasy turn-based combat: you'll use the terrain and put your ranged heroes up high to rain pain down on enemies, while your meatshields will stand there being huge lumps, taking big hits and dishing them out in return. The full game will feature 20 classes for your procedurally generated crew of mercenaries to apply themselves too, meaning it's easy to imagine things will quickly get more complicated as all of those different skills and abilities come into play. Factor in the different enemies and what looks like cultists summoning up a big gobliny boy, and this feels like it's going to be simple to learn and a real pain to master.

Outside of this though, Happy Bastards is promising a lot, letting people explore a "rich, hand-crafted fantasy world" that promises no pre-scripted story with the ability for "every town, hero, and monster faction" to be turned ally or foe where they'll be trying to achieve their own aims. This sounds compelling, but most importantly it seems highly replayable. Check out the combat demo on Steam.
