Games receiving hate online is nothing new, although it seems to have reached a fever pitch in recent years. There is a small but loud portion of the gaming community that is rooting for games to fail long before they launch, for various reasons largely unrelated to the games themselves. Highguard, for example, was panned largely because its announcement trailer was the final trailer of the 2025 Game Awards, not because of anything to do with the game itself. Fans just wanted to see something different in that slot, and Highguard paid the price.
