How to save Vlad in The Blood of Dawnwalker

If you're curious whether you can save Vlad in Blood of Dawnwalker, chances are you've probably just killed him. Unable to resist your newly-gained vampiric urges, you chomped his neck and drank his blood, and the game didn't give you a choice in the matter.

Well, there is a way Vlad can survive your encounter after he leaves the burning house, towards the end of the prologue. Obviously, this will contain spoilers for this final section of the prologue, so leave 10 seconds ago if you're here by accident.

How to save Vlad in Blood of Dawnwalker

If you want Vlad to survive the conversation you two have when he exits the burning house, you need to have more than one health segment. Since health is blood for vampires, when you're one segment or below, you're hungry, which impacts your conversations with human characters, i.e. makes you want to eat them.

If you are below one segment when you convince Vlad to leave the burning house, you're unable to resist your hunger and you kill him. If you're above one segment, though, you resist and Vlad survives, giving you some vital information about the rebel network in Vale Sangora and promising to meet you later on.

The challenge in saving Vlad is that immediately before the conversation with him, you have to battle a Vrakhiri Banneret miniboss and a soldier. If they hit you a couple of times, chances are you'll be below the necessary health for the conversation. If you kill some other soldiers wandering the area first, you can get some Vial of Human Blood healing items to use it in the fight if they do happen to put you below that health mark.

Obviously, for Vlad to survive, you also need to make sure not to pick the dialogue option that says [Give in to the hunger] but that's self-explanatory. In general, though, this is a good lesson for the whole game: never have conversations with humans at night when you're at one health segment or lower, unless you want bad things to happen.
