Hideo Kojima wants to 'continue to focus on making games' at 63, even as 'the time I have decreases'

It's often said that time comes for us all—and while it may not yet be at the doorstep of one Hideo Kojima, he's grown introspective about the prospect on social media after turning 63 over the weekend. In case you've somehow not heard of the man, he's the mind behind the Metal Gear series and Death Stranding.
"I've turned 63," Kojima posted to X. "As I get older, the things I 'have to do' and the things I 'want to do' keep increasing. On the other hand, the 'time I have' decreases. I need to constantly scrutinize how I use my time and how I live my life."
It's a particularly nostalgic date for Kojima, however, as 2026 also "marks the 40th anniversary of when I started making games, and the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions." To celebrate, he intends to hold an exhibition at Tokyo's Azabudai Hills Gallery starting at the end of October and lasting until the end of the year.
To those fearing his flooded schedule and nostalgic thoughts might precede a retirement from games, though, rest easy. Kojima's flooded schedule is more of a motivator than a detractor: "With all the opportunities and offers I'm receiving, I want to continue to focus on making games. Thank you for your continued support."
Which, hey, is a relief even as someone not particularly attached to either of his flagship franchises—not for purposes of taste, mind. With an industry where big-budget games are coming out with increasingly bland, characterless stories, I'm charmed pink whenever I see some out-of-context Death Stranding cutscene where Tommie Earl Jenkins breaks out into song, or Troy Baker plays guitar while dressed up like a cyberpunk Joker.
It's hard to imagine an industry without Kojima, though it'll happen someday. At which point he'll apparently be watching movie trailers.
