One of the best things about Dragon Ball Super is how the series handles transformations compared to Dragon Ball Z. In DBZ, forms were a mostly linear upgrade where the next transformation was always better than the last, especially for Saiyans. By the end of the series, there was no reason for Goku and Vegeta not to use Super Saiyan 2 (or in Goku’s case, SSJ3,) as their main states. Super Saiyan Blue has taken over that role in Dragon Ball Super, but the series also features unique forms exclusive to individual characters – even Saiyans.
